The 241 meter tall dam will flood an area of over 640 sq kms, almost the size of Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>Scheduled to complete its EIA\/SIA this year, SMEC has been blocked by local communities from surveying the main impacted townships, including Kunhing, whose renowned \u201cthousand islands\u201d in the Pang tributary will be submerged by the dam reservoir.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-978\" src=\"https:\/\/burmese.shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/25-08-15-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/burmese.shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/25-08-15-2.jpg 660w, https:\/\/burmese.shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/25-08-15-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/burmese.shanhumanrights.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/25-08-15-2-630x420.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>SMEC had angered locals by blatantly promoting the dam in public meetings, downplaying negative impacts, and promising them electricity, even though the dam\u2019s main purpose is to export power to China and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Salween River is the lifeblood of millions of ethnic people in Burma,\u201d said Nang Kham Naung, a Kunhing resident. \u201cIt is ours, and must not be sold by Naypyidaw and foreign companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite being authorized by Naypyidaw, SMEC has also been blocked by Wa armed authorities from surveying in their area, highlighting the insecurity of building dams in a conflict zone.
